The Guiro is an instrument used all over South America, Central America, and the surrounding islands. This first video is a good example of how to play the guiro.
Traditionally, guiros were made from dried gourds and fruits. Sometimes they would be made from bones or wood. Not all guiros are handmade traditionally anymore. You can find metal and plastic guiros at music stores. These are more durable and can play louder, sharper sounds that work better for modern bands. Try the listening activity below.
